Several netizens shared their ire over an online article tagging Kapamilya host-actress Kim Chiu as a starlet.
In the article Hot Girl Summer: Kim Chiu Brings Out the Fun Under the Sun, published by Nylon Manila on April 13, the writer called Chiu a “versatile starlet,” which gained furious reactions from the netizens.
In a tweet, @xPurpleTutux slammed Nylon Manila for disrespecting Chiu, who has been in the industry for almost two decades and has since earned numerous awards and recognitions.
“The DISRESPECT @NYLONManila. Kim has come a long way, worked so hard, endured bashings, earned achievements and accolades here and there, for you to refer to her as a “versatile STARLET”. It could have been a really good article, but, you just have to ruin it with this. TSK!
”Pinoy Big Brother Justin Dizon also reacted, tweeting “Kim Chiu is an A-lister. May napatunayan, maraming projects, maraming endorsements, at maraming fans. We should also remove the negative connotation with the word “starlet”. Stick na lang tayo sa definition para mas inspiring — a newbie who has to earn their place at the table.”
Netizen @itsleonorrivera, also tweeted asking, If Kim Chiu is still considered a starlet, then what should Nylon Manila call those unknown stars on the GMA Network?
“I am not a fan of Kim Chui but my gosh @NYLONManila – Kim is already considered an A-Lister with numerous box-office movies, high rating tv series and several endorsements! Eh kung starlet sa yo si @prinsesachinita, ano naman ang tawag mo sa mga never heard sa Kamuning?”
“someone who has been in the industry for more than a decade, had blockbuster movies, top rating series… I’m not a super fan of her but if someone like her is still a stralet, what does it take to be a star?”
After the social media uproar, Nylon Manila edited the article, removing the word “starlet” to describe Chiu.
In a tweet, entertainment blogger Rod Magaru thanked Nylon Manila for correcting the article and reminded the entertainment website to be better next time.
“Thanks for correcting the article, be better next time. Just dont say STARLET and then use “actress” then “versatile” then “iconic showbiz princess”. Doesn’t add up.”
Chiu started in the industry in 2002 after winning the first PBB Teen edition.
Since then, she has done numerous films and teleseryes which have earned her several nominations and acting awards.
In 2013, she was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Category in the FAMAS, Enpress Golden Screen Awards, Gawad Pasado, and PMPC Star Awards for the movie, The Healing.
In 2019, she won Film Actress of the Year at the 50th Box Office Entertainment Awards for the film One Great Love.
