On Christmas Day, a family of four was found dead in their lakeside home in Wakefield, New Hampshire, as CBS News Boston reported.

According to the Daily Mail UK, the family fell victim to the “silent killer”—carbon monoxide poisoning.

Investigators revealed that the propane heating system in their lakefront house malfunctioned, poisoning the family as they slept.

It’s still unclear why the system failed, and investigators noted that no carbon monoxide alarms were found in the home.

That’s why New Hampshire Fire Marshal Sean Toomey is urging people to have such an alarm inside their homes.

The family that perished from the “silent killer” were Matthew Goldstein, 52, an elementary school teacher, and his wife, Lyla Goldstein, 54, a project manager at Microsoft.

Their daughters, Valerie, 22, who was also a teacher, and Violet, 19, a college student, also passed away.

The SUV driver admitted he fell asleep because of exhaustion, he will be facing multiple complaints because of the incident.
