In a world where voices can move mountains, Sofronio Vasquez‘s story stands tall—a soulful crescendo that has Filipinos beaming with pride and the world taking notice.
On December 10 (US time), Sofronio carved his name in history as the first Filipino—and Asian—to win The Voice USA, Season 26. With his electrifying performances of Sia’s “Unstoppable” and The Greatest Showman’s “A Million Dreams,” Sofronio captivated the hearts of millions, clinching the title, a $100,000 prize, and a coveted record deal.
“Your mentorship is a gift—not just to me but to my family and every dreamer chasing big things,” Vasquez gushed to his coach Michael Bublé, moments before his victory was sealed. “You’ve opened doors I didn’t even know existed.”
Michael, in turn, couldn’t hide his emotions, saying, “What a wild, unbelievable journey it’s been to stand here with you.”
Even in the blind auditions, Sofronio’s powerful rendition of Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Going Down” turned all four coaches’ chairs—Snoop Dogg, Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, and Gwen Stefani. Teaming up with Bublé, he soared through the competition with stunning performances like Elvis Presley’s “If I Can Dream” and Roy Orbison’s “Crying,” earning standing ovations along the way.
Who is Sofronio before The Voice US?
But before Sofronio became a household name, his journey was anything but ordinary. Born in Mindanao, the 32-year-old singer initially pursued a career in dentistry, studying at Misamis University. However, his father’s passing in 2022 reignited his musical aspirations. Sofronio relocated to Utica, New York, juggling dental assistant gigs while sharpening his vocal craft.
Before his meteoric rise in the US, Sofronio had already made waves in the Philippines.
A voice that defied the odds
Sofronio’s Philippine singing journey began in 2018 on Tawag ng Tanghalan, where his passionate performances won him fans but fell short of ultimate victory. With overflowing confidence, he returned in 2019’s “All-Star Grand Resbak,” reclaiming the stage with Kelly Clarkson’s “My Grown-Up Christmas List” and finishing third.
When the pandemic hit, Sofronio refused to let the world’s silence dim his star. On the Filipino streaming app Kumu, he became a sensation, winning contests like “Raise Your Voice” “Singing Royals,” and “Ang Galing Mo,” to name a few. He also released music, including the heartfelt single “Bakit Hindi Ko Sinabi” which is an original single under Old School, a sub-label of ABS-CBN Music.
By 2021, he had earned the Kumu Diamond Award as the most-watched streamer on the platform and the title Metro Man x Kumu Cover Star, for which feature he shared his journey as a singer.
Despite the lack of a single chair turn during his stint on The Voice of the Philippines, he made an unforgettable comeback on The Voice US, where all four chairs spun in unison, proving that sometimes, the right stage just makes all the difference.
Beyond the notes
Sofronio’s versatility is his secret weapon. Whether belting out pop, R&B, or jazz—or even rapping—he connects with audiences in a way that feels personal.
His original tracks “Bililhon” and “Mahalaga” highlight his storytelling ability, weaving themes of resilience and hope.
From humble beginnings in Philippine singing competitions to dazzling the international stage, Sofronio Vasquez reminds us all that dreams are worth chasing. With every note, he’s not just raising the Filipino flag—he’s showing the world that talent, grit, and heart know no boundaries.
