Ruben Amorim has spoken for the first time as Manchester United’s new head coach.
After Erik ten Hag was dismissed on the back of a 2-1 defeat by West Ham United, ex-Sporting CP boss Amorim was chosen as the Dutchman’s successor.
A club statement read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.
“He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.”
This week, the 39-year-old conducted his first official interview as the Red Devils’ new boss.
In a video posted on the club’s channel, fans were quick to point out one gesture he did.
As he explained his vision and aims for the club, Amorim appeared to interlock his hands, which is very similar to the trademark celebration of Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has been linked with a move to United.
Reacting on social media, one fan said: “Can’t believe Ruben Amorim confirmed we are signing Gyokeres in this interview.”
Another tweeted: “We will be there.”
A third fan added: “Ruben Amorim: so if I have to say one thing. Bringing Viktor Gyokeres to Manchester United.”
However, a fan quickly pointed out: “Bro come on, so out of context.”
Someone else commented: “I saw that too but I didn’t interpret it that way.”

Speaking after officially becoming United boss, Amorim said: “First of all, I think I felt a connection with the club. And when I say with the club, everybody knows Manchester United. But I feel the connection with the people in the club and that is very important for me because I want to work with people that I like and I feel a connection.
“The second point is the history of this club. All the people are hungry for success and I feel that this is the place that I want to be also because of that, because you can be part of something special, not just one more.”
He added: “And that is something that I really like. And of course, because of the fans, because in Portugal you listen a lot, a lot of stuff from the media. But when you see the games here, when you see the games, the interaction with the managers, with the players, even in difficult moments, I think it is a special club.”
