Sharon Cuneta initially hesitant to do ad with Gabby Concepcion

Sharon Cuneta on love story with Gabby Concepcion: “Your first true love, then it disappeared.”

In her interview with Korina Sanchez for Rated K last Sunday, March 4, Sharon Cuneta admitted why she initially felt hesitant about doing the fastfood ad with Gabby Concepcion, which eventually turned out to be a viral phenomenon: “I didn’t want to do it because we’re not on good terms, e. We don’t talk. I know, the excitement is pretty big. What I’m not sure about is how they’ll accept that we’re in our 50s?”

Sharon Cuneta admitted that she was hesitant to do a McDonald’s commercial with ex-husband and former love team Gabby Concepcion.

The Megastar shared this in an interview with  Rated K  last night, March 4.

He said, “Right, we were supposed to be making a movie two years ago until last year, it didn’t continue, so I said maybe it’s gone.”

“And then suddenly this McDdonald’s was offered to us, which truthfully, I didn’t want to do because we weren’t on good terms, eh.

“We’re not talking. I know, the excitement is pretty big.”

“What I’m not sure about is how to accept that we’re in our 50s?”

Sharon also said that she had to pray about her decision before finally accepting the project.

How was their meeting on the day of the shooting, especially since there was a rift between them?

The 52-year-old actress replied, “Actually, I don’t really know what happened.

“We’re not enemies face to face, eh. I didn’t know what to expect but it was always negative.”

“It was kind of nerve-wracking, not knowing if I was accepting this right, but then suddenly, after a while, he said, ‘Hi!’

“‘Hi!’ I said, ‘and then he had a fruit basket. I just said thank you, ‘and then, ‘Okay, I’ll see you later.'”

They said their apprehensions about each other disappeared when the camera started rolling.

“My God, Lord! The minute we were given instructions, it was like we were shooting just yesterday. We immediately went back to our old ways.

“We knew exactly what they wanted from the storyboard. And then there was a realness to the, ‘Do you mind if I join you,’ that was the first time you were talking.

“It was true. There was some awkwardness, some awkwardness until later, when it was relaxed again.”

What was his reaction when he watched the entire commercial?

“Actually, when I saw the commercial, I was dumbfounded, then I watched it again, and I actually cried.”

HISTORY OF SHAGAB.   Sharon and Gabby first worked together in the movie  Dear Heart in 1981.

In Sharon’s story, they didn’t talk during the early part of their shooting until they got better.

“We’re shooting, we’re not talking.

“It’s not because I’m irritated, but because I’m not friendly and then I feel isolated from him.”

“But when we have a scene like that, he’s kind, he’s very down-to-earth.

“Towards the end, there were phone calls. When we were promoting, it was us!”

In September 1984, Sharon and Gabby were married at the Manila Cathedral, where Sharon was already pregnant with their first child, KC.

She said, “I was already pregnant then. In the middle of the ceremony, I remember I was telling Gabby, ‘Dad, I really need to throw up,’ because I was so sick.

“The monsignor did, just speed up.”

Sharon-Gabby fans thronged their wedding.

The singer-actress also recalled, “The altar was broken because it was opened. My veil was stolen.”

“I just used the veil from the secondary sponsor at the reception, the one they put on you.”

“‘Then, the exhaust of the bridal car exploded, ‘then when we got to the hotel, there was a metro aide, that’s it, I visited them all.”

THE BREAK-UP.  But in 1986, Sharon and Gabby separated.

It was 1990 when they reunited in a movie.

This is when they did  Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin ?

Sharon said about this, “That movie  Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin? , from beginning to end, we didn’t talk.

“I have very bad memories of that whole movie. Even when you’re rehearsing the lines, when you take them, it’s different.

“And then we couldn’t tell people that we didn’t get along. But the whole movie that came out was good.”

People back then thought they would get back together.

However, according to Sharon, “He met someone else and he chose her.

“But that’s okay, I mean, that’s a long time ago.

“It has something to do also, I have issues, Korina, na people think they call you Mega, people think you have everything.”

At this point Sharon became emotional.

Pagpapatuloy niya, “I’ve always felt I was never enough for any man since my first husband, so you know…

“I know how to channel lang my energies and every time I would come out lang on TV, I have a license to be happy.

“You know, if it was all heart, then mind and heart, not just heart.”

Did they not talk for a few years before they did the project?

Sharon laughingly admits, “We have very little contact and usually it would end in a fight!”

Before the commercial they worked on together, Sharon and Gabby’s last project together was the 1992 film  Tayong Dalawa .

Sharon said about it, “I was so happy there, huh.

“I could be friends with the father of my daughter, that’s how I felt. That’s a very special movie.”

Suddenly, he thought while laughing, “Your first true love, ‘then it disappeared. So I feel like, it happened, Snow White [me] ‘then it fell apart.”

Korina’s last question to Sharon was whether the ShaGab reunion movie would go ahead.

Sharon just smiled and replied, “It depends on Gabby and Star Cinema.”
