Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was asked who his toughest opponent is and he picked a world-class Premier League icon.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has revealed the toughest opponent he has ever had to play against and the Scottish star has picked one of the most impressive Premier League players of all time.

McTominay came through the ranks at Man Utd and made over 250 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit. However, he was deemed surplus to requirements this summer and moved on to Italy to start a new chapter in his career with Napoli.

The 27-year-old is excelling in Serie A so far but having faced some of the world’s best players during his time in England, he was quick to recall one Chelsea icon who gave him a particularly torrid time.

Speaking to FootballJOE earlier this year, McTominay was asked a number of questions about his career, and when posed the question of who his toughest opponent has been, he selected Eden Hazard.

McTominay said: “In terms of a midfielder, the game changes so much and it’s so fluid, you have players like Eden Hazard who could drop into a number 10 role, where you have to play a little deeper and defend against him.

“Obviously he’s a winger, more of an attacker, but sometimes you’d come up one-vs-one against him, and throughout 45 minutes if they’re changing players and system, I’d say him.”

McTominay also discussed the kind of players he has modelled his game on over the years, and explained that he will always look at players of a similar physical build to himself.

“I started watching people like Zidane, Yaya Toure was a similar sort of build and height, and just try to emulate what they do as best I can do,” he added.

As for the players he idolised when he was younger, McTominay stayed loyal to Manchester United, highlighting Wayne Rooney in particular.

On Rooney, he said: “To eventually play with him, and against him, that was really special.”

McTominay is now mixing it up with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Billy Gilmour, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at Napoli, with his new team top of the Serie A table after seven games. He’s even earned special praise from his manager, Antonio Conte, who is delighted to have McTominay in his squad.
