Sisters Ria Atayde and Gela Atayde were in the mood to shun haters with savage yet insightful words.
While celebrities are often the easy targets, even ordinary people, even you can be on the receiving end of body shaming. And sometimes you have to answer for your own body. Ria and Gela demonstrate how to do it in a classy manner. Watch them react to toxic mean comments in this video from “Hot Summer: LaHot Sexy.”
First of all, as advocates of body positivity, they believe everyone should be a lot more sensitive in speaking about one’s physical appearance. Ria dropped this golden rule: “Don’t comment on anything about a person if that’s something they can’t change within 5 seconds.” Not that you should really be criticizing or judging what other people like anyway.

Never be like people who tell women, “Flat-chested kala mo dalawa ang likod.” Gela admitted she used to get this comment a lot but it doesn’t affect her anymore. The truth is she appreciates her small breasts, which are just perfect for active and athletic girls like her.
Comment number 2 says “Nag-two-piece pa! Parang embutido naman, sobrang siksik!” Ria boldly clapped back, “Grabe! Masarap kaya embutido. Na-try n’yo na ba embutido? Suman din masarap.” She added, “You know what? Just let people be happy. Sexiness is embracing your body and being comfortable in it. If they’re comfortable seeing themselves in two-piece, anong trip mo, ‘di ba?”
Some people simply can’t be happy with others’ happiness that when you flex the product of your intense exercise they’d say, “’Di naman ‘yan nag-workout. Nagpa-lipo lang ‘yan,” to which Ria would react, “Paano n’yo alam? O, at least may pera para magpa-lipo.” Seriously, though, she pressed that we shouldn’t discredit other people’s effort to get in shape and there’s nothing wrong with going through liposuction or plastic surgery, either. As Gela puts it, “If they can, why not? They’re not hurting anyone. They’re not using your money. It’s theirs.”
The next statement degrades women with stretch marks. Face palm. The sisters explained that there’s science behind these scars and they’re inevitable. If anything, they are women’s battle scars, “proof that they were able to transform themselves kahit papaano that their bodies are capable of change.”
“May bagyo ba? Makulimlim ‘ata. The kili-kili is so dark,” read the next comment. “Walang takas, eh, no?” Thus, Ria reminds everyone to be kind because people go through something we are clueless about.
At the end of the video, the duo shared the worst comment that affected them and how they overcame it. For Ria, it would have to be, “Ang taba taba mo sana mamatay ka na?” Little do people know, she was still not confident about her body then. “Everything is a work in progress. You’re not necessarily always okay and comfortable. I think I let it affect me for, like, two days. How did I overcome it? Eh, wala naman akong magagawa.” She revealed that her body is affected by a medical condition called hypothyroidism, “I have no gall bladder. Losing weight is a lot harder for me than it is for other people.”
“So, wala, I feel like these are things na you just have to have a conversation with yourself and remind yourself that it’s only the opinions of people that matter to you that should really affect you. And for as long as you’re not hurting anybody and you’re not stepping on anybody then you’re fine. Your physical attributes should not dictate who you are as a person.”
Gela echoed the same sentiments, telling us that she always gets comments saying she couldn’t enter showbiz because she’s big. It compelled her to stop wanting to enter showbiz at one point and she’s still learning to overcome the trauma until now.
To add to what Gela said, Ria preached, “I think it also takes a level of embracing yourself and celebrating yourself for others to see that since okay with yourself, anong masasabi nila ‘di ba?” She rolled her eyes in frustration, “Kakaasar, ‘di ba? This is something people deal with and it really does take a toll on people’s mental health. And they don’t realize it. Like I said, people go through something all the time, like, if you’re saying something, is it necessary? Is it kind? Try to filter the things you say to people kasi hindi mo alam gaano kaapektado sila sa sinasabi n’yo.”
