Spanish media have made their feelings clear on Donny van de Beek despite one start since joining from Man Utd

The Spanish media have already had their say on Donny van de Beek just months after he completed his transfer to La Liga side Girona,

Van de Beek left Manchester United over the summer transfer window, joining La Liga club Girona for a shocking reported fee of just £500,000.

The former Ajax midfielder spent four years at Old Trafford, having joined for a fee of £35 million, but failed to make a mark or establish a regular place in the squad.

And now after making his first start for his new club, the Spanish media have made their feelings about Van de Beek very clear.

Spanish outlet Sport per Sport Witness have reported that the Dutchman has struggled to adapt to life at Girona and therefore, it was a shock when he was handed his first start of the season in the Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

They suggested that they expect his role at the club to be more of a secondary one, but nonetheless were impressed by his performance in the 1-0 loss to the French champions.

The Spanish website wrote: “In PSG’s pressure on the ball, he and Ivan [Martin] led the defensive block, high and with the defensive line planted in the centre of the field. He did not spare any effort, which is why he gave the impression that he was ‘there but not there’, or that he was not very involved with the ball.”

They continued: “Now, can you ask for more from him ? Yes and no. Yes, because he has the quality and experience to come back and be what he once was. And no, because, really, Van de Beek is no longer the Van de Beek of Ajax.”

The 27-year-old made just 62 appearances for Manchester United having spent two seasons on loan with Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt,

“I want to thank you all for your support throughout the years. From the moment we arrived, we felt extremely welcome, and we are grateful for that. A special thanks to all the fans who made these years unforgettable. Besides football, the birth of our two children here ensures that Manchester will always have a special place in our hearts. Good luck to everybody, we’ll meet again.”
