HONG KONG — Host-comedian Vice Ganda is gearing up to star in his first movie in two years under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Jun Robles Lana.

ABS-CBN confirmed that Vice, whose last big screen appearance was 2022’s “Partners in Crime,” will star in the upcoming film “And The Breadwinner Is.”

This will be Vice’s first time working with Direk Jun, whose The IdeaFirst Company is producing the film alongside Star Magic in another first.

“First time naming magsasama and ang saya-saya ko talaga,” Vice said in a statement. “Highlight ito ng career ko hindi lang this year, pero ng movie career ko. Isa ito sa pinakamalaking highlights.”

The director echoed Vice’s sentiments about working together, and promised the movie would be a different experience filled with comedy, drama, and heartfelt moments.

“It is everything na inaantay ng mga tao sa isang pelikula ni Vice, yung nakakatawa at riot na comedy and so much more,” Jun said. “Kung nakita natin si Vice magpatawa, makikita rin natin siya mangurot ng mga puso.”

Vice admitted he’s seen major success with past hits like “Petrang Kabayo,” the “Praybeyt Benjamin” movies, and more earning P4.6 billion at the box office, but he is hoping to have a project that can compete at an international film festival.

“Dream ko ‘to. I have been praying for a movie na may internal value. Di ba meron din mga pelikula na hindi tumabo sa takilya pero has an internal value sa Philippine cinema at sa kamalayan ng mga taong nakapanood sa kanya,” Vice continued. “Dumarating ang panahon na binabalikan siya dahil sa uri ng pelikula niya. I want to experience that now.”

The host-comedian teased that “It’s Showtime” co-host Jhong Hilario will take part in the the film but did not give any more other details about cast inclusions.

Daisy Cayanan Mijares and Jumbo Alano will pen “And The Breadwinner Is,” touching on the experiences of a breadwinner and their joys, pains, struggles, and hopes.

Jun is best known for directing the films “Die Beautiful,” “Ten Little Mistresses,” “About Us But Not About Us,” “Becky & Badette,” and “The Panti Sisters.”
