Cherie Gil tearfully apologized to Vice Ganda for calling him “scum” on her Twitter account.
It’s Showtime celebrated its 5th anniversary with a lot of hoopla and exceptional performances from the hosts.
As one of judges during the “Magpasikat” segment, Cherie took the opportunity to personally say sorry to the comedian last October 23.
The veteran actress told viewers: “I hope you will give me time to express what I really feel about that performance, about you, Vice Ganda…”
She admitted that she agreed to serve as a Showtime judge in order to know Vice Ganda at a deeper level.
The actress known for her kontrabida roles remarked, “When I was asked to judge here in Showtime, of course, aside from having fun and knowing the experience. Sabi ko, ang pinakamotivation ko dito ay para makilala ko si Vice Ganda dahil hindi ko pa siya nakikilala in person nor have I seen you perform.
“I only hear a lot of hearsay, good and bad. Ang sabi ko naman, ang hirap maghusga ng kapwa kong kolega [colleague] sa industriya pero I’m sure katuwaan lang ‘to at ngayon lang ako bumilib at nakita ang iba’t–ibang kakayahan and know what they can do.”
She added, “That was the first time I saw you do a stand-up [comedy] and now I understand why you really touch every man’s heart sa iyong natural wit, intelligence. You really, really reach out to them in the most natural, honest way. And you seldom find this in this business.
“I listened to the song which you wrote, ‘Ikaw ay tuwid / Ako ay hindi / Pero hindi ibig sabihin ako ay mali/ Wala kang karapatan husgahan ako.'”
Cherie admitted that she may have been too hasty when she prejudged Vice Ganda in the past.
“Nobody, not even I, ay may karapatang husgahan ang kahit na sino…”
Last June, Cherie denounced Vice Ganda when he poked fun at Jessica Soho’s weight during a concert. Cherie posted on her Twitter account:
“To Vice Ganda: you’re one of those scums of the earth. Shame on the Filipinos who laugh at such insensitivity and tactlessness.”
During her appearance on It’s Showtime, Cherie’s voice cracked as she cried while giving her apology:
“So now I would like to personally apologize to you because I know at some point in the past, I have reacted to one of your standup stints which maybe perhaps may have been written by someone else. And I didn’t take that into consideration at that time. I also found myself in a bad place and I got myself a lot of hate tweets for that. I realized that at the end of the day, it all comes down to getting to know the person better and understanding every story each person’s goes through.”
Cherie tearfully said: “Thank you Vice Ganda so much for letting me get to know you today in the deepest, most real sense, most honest, and for letting me get to know you: YOU as a person through that song… You touched my heart. Thank you!”
Vice Ganda wiped away tears upon hearing Cherie’s apology on air.
