First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos has given an explanation regarding the viral video in which she was seen grabbing Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s champagne glass, drinking it, and then returning it to the senator.

The scene occurred during the Vin d’Honneur held in Malacañang on Independence Day, June 12.

According to FL Liza, after almost an hour of greeting the visiting ambassadors while standing, she and President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. entered the ceremonial hall where Escudero greeted her.

She said Escudero was impressed by her because she still had “energy” after an hour of standing, and told her to drink wine first.

“We were ushered to where Chiz and Martin Romualdez were standing. When Chiz saw me, he said `Wow I’m also impressed with you, you still have energy after standing and smiling for over an hour.’ He said `I’m sure you could use a drink’,” the First Lady said.

He allegedly laughed and jokingly grabbed the champagne glass Escudero was holding and tasted it, saying the champagne wasn’t cold so he returned it and they laughed some more.

He said it only lasted about ten seconds but critics on social media immediately celebrated it.

“I’ve known Chiz since my law school days, he studied in UP and I went to Ateneo, we’ve been for like, forever. So whatever I made him a waiter and or, he responded `like a gentleman’ is between us,” the First Lady said.
