Chanda Romero on her former relationship with the late actor Bernardo Bernardo: “It didn’t matter to me what his $3x preference was, but I loved him because it was him.”
In an episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda last Thursday, January 25, Chanda Romero recalled her past relationship with the late gay veteran actor-comedian Bernardo Bernardo, noting how $3xual preferences did not matter as they truly loved each other.
The actress told talk show host Boy Abunda how her relationship with Bernardo differed from the relationships she had with straight men.
“That was different because I think, looking back, that was very special, because ’yon ang talagang I loved him as he was,” she said. “It didn’t matter to me what his $3xual preference was but I loved him because it was him. I just loved the whole of him.”
Romero also looked back at the set-up of their relationship, saying how she was always supportive when Bernardo would divulge his crushes to her.
“Minsan nga kapag sinasabi niya na ‘Meron akong bagong crush diyan,’ [sasabihin ko na] ‘Hindi! Samahan kita, tingnan ko muna. Kailangan i-approve ko muna,’” she said.
Moreover, Romero said their love simply focused on happiness, going beyond the topic of $3xuality.
“When Bernardo loved me when we were together, it was one of the few times that I knew it was really love between the both of us,” she shared. “And it was taboo. We were just so unafraid and so proud of having found each other. We were both happy.
In 2013, Romero married Jose Mari “Mayi” Alejandrino and has been with him since. Prior to tying the knot, they have been together for seven years. The actress currently stars in the GMA-7 series Black Rider starring Ruru Madrid.
Bernardo, on the other hand, is best known for his award-winning roles in the films Manila By Night and Invisible, among others, as well as his comedic roles in movie and television, such as Steve Carpio in Home Along Da Riles. He passed away last March 2018 after a tumor was found in his pancreas.
