BB Gandanghari recalls how gay rumor tested Rustom Padilla’s relationship with Carmina Villarroel
BB chronicles how her “twin” Rustom wanted to marry Carmina at first sight.
BB Gandanghari still vividly remembers how his “twin” Rustom Padilla fell in love with Carmina Villarroel the moment he laid eyes on her on June 24, 1992. But as early as January 1993, their relationship was put to the test when his masculinity got questioned by the press.
Rustom Padilla felt love at first sight for Carmina Villarroel back then.
This is what BB Gandanghari maintained when he revisited the love story between his “twin” Rustom and Carmina.
BB was formerly known as ’90s matinee idol Rustom before he came out as “gay” on the ABS-CBN reality show Pinoy Big Brother on March 2, 2006.
A U.S. court legally allowed Rustom to change his name to Binibining Gandanghari in November 2016.
At the same time, BB was recognized as “female” in her identification, based on documents from the Court of California, County of Orange.
BB has been based in Los Angeles, California since then.
In his Youtube vlog on June 21, 2020, BB looked back on his memories of Carmina in a bittersweet way.
As Rustom, he still remembers that it was as if he was destined to meet Carmina.
It was 1992, less than a year after he resigned from his job as a flight attendant at Philippine Airlines to enter showbiz.
Rustom thought of visiting his brother Robin Padilla while he was shooting the movie Miss Na Miss Kita: Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum Part 2 in Baguio.
Rustom happened to be from Baguio because he graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in Economics.
Rustom said that in the crowd, he saw Ana Roces, Robin’s co-star in the movie, and Ruffa Gutierrez, who has a family rest house in Baguio.
It was the first time Rustom had met Ruffa and Ana, but because of the happy conversation, Ruffa invited Rustom to attend her 18th birthday.
He was part of Ruffa’s 18 Roses, and the only partner he remembers was Ana.
But before Ruffa’s debut on June 24, 1992, Rustom was introduced to Carmina by a common friend named Maristela.
She was said to be the assistant of the late showbiz talk show host Inday Badiday, aka Ate Luds.
BB looks back: “At that time, someone close to us, one of Ate Luds’ assistants, Maristela—Robin’s first wife—of course we already knew them, I wasn’t an actress yet because they always came to the house.
She said, ‘Hey, Rustom! Carmina just split!’
“Rustom said, ‘Oh, really? How are you?’ Playing cupid.
“Until he managed to get Carmina and Rustom to meet.”
RUSTOM HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH CARMINA
Rustom considers Ruffa’s debut as his and Carmina’s first date.
They were not partners on the program, but Rustom was the one who picked Carmina up.
Rustom was 25 years old at the time, while Carmina was only 16 years old.
BB said, “I think that was the first date, June 24, 1992. And so they started dating.
“I remember, Rustom, very, very in love.
“This is not a joke. I’m not saying this to cover up. ‘Oh, are you really in love?’
“The moment he saw Carmina, he thought she was the one he wanted to marry.
“Rustom had a feeling that he was going to get married, and that proved to be true all throughout the relationship.”
Rustom allegedly dated Carmina for two months before he and Carmina became lovers around August 1992.
Rustom is said to be the type of devoted boyfriend and Carmina was a close confidant during his shooting.
This was despite Rustom being busy as a showbiz newbie who had appeared in four movies in 1992.
Carmina was a well-known teen star and mainstay of Palibhasa Lalake when she and Rustom met.
BB continued, “So, Rustom is a new artist. He does a lot but he manages to keep an eye on her.
“Rustom doesn’t sleep—shooting, watching over Carmina, shooting.
“Not for anything, and I can say this with my whole heart, because he saw true love. He saw the real thing in Carmina, who is normal.”
Rustom also had a girlfriend when he was in college. But he felt something different about Carmina.
Carmina is a real person despite being an artist.
BB said, “I think, at the time, that’s why Rustom became super serious, he saw the normalcy in show business.
“That’s what he experienced with Carmina. That’s why he got very attached.
“Because Carmina is normal. She’s not showbiz.
“So, that’s why she became persistent.”
Rustom can be said to be very happy with Carmina.
“To cut the long story short, experience with Carmina became very intense.
“That Carmina was already a part of his life at that early. There was so much emotional attachment.
“Carmina was always [on] top of his head, top of his priority,” BB said.
Rustom said that no matter how much he cared for Carmina, that’s why he was so worried when their relationship was first tested.
THE OMiNIOUS INCIDENT YEARS BEFORE COMING OUT
Rustom and Carmina had been secretly dating for five months when the young man appeared at an endorsement presscon.
At that time, January 1993, Rustom was a contract star of Viva and was being launched as “the next important dramatic actor” when rumors spread that he was gay.
BB looks back, “So, the presscon, 1993, shaking, sweating hands, praying while very scared.
“He doesn’t know how to say it’s not true.
“This is his first solo presscon, the issue was discussed.”
He continued: “Wow, at the onset of your career, that’s what you were up against.
“So, what was the gist of the presscon? ‘Are you gay?'”
The truth is that the rumors that spread are baseless.
According to BB, “Rustom doesn’t know how to express himself.
“But one thing is for sure, everything that is being accused of him being gay is not true.
“The rumor was, he joined a beauty pageant.
“Well, if I was this beautiful back then, why would I hide it? I must have had so many crowns!
“But, imagine, a matinee idol on the verge of stardom, that’s what’s being issued.”
After the presscon, Rustom allegedly drove and picked up Carmina at ABS-CBN where the Palibhasa Lalake girl was taping.
Rustom was very worried about how Carmina would feel when the malicious gossip about him reached him.
But Rustom also didn’t know how to talk to his girlfriend about the issue.
In the mind of the then-young man, “He wants to shrug it off and move on.
“He feels like he has no defense. No matter what he says, it’s still the same.”
When Carmina asked him about what happened at the press conference, Rustom decided not to talk about the slander against him that he was gay.
Rustom’s only response was, “Okay. It’s fine.”
He didn’t bring up the topic again until he had brought Carmina home.
The next day, Rustom’s response to the press was in the headlines of the newspaper.
“This is the headline when he was asked ‘Are you really gay?’ His response was, excuse me for the word, ‘P.I. I’m not gay!’
“So, that’s the issue.”
He said he was embarrassed to question his manhood.
BB said, “When Rustom read that, the first thing that came to his mind was Carmina.
“Not for nothing, because if anyone knew Rustom, it was Carmina.
“They had been together for five months at that time.
“If you’re a man, the news is big.”
“Rustom didn’t know at that time if he still wanted to see Carmina.
“But for sure, they never talked about it.
“But he had that thought. But not
