READ: Official statement of Aquino family on passing of former president Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino
The Aquino family has released their official statement on the passing of their brother, former Philippine president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, this Thursday morning, June 24. He was 61.
In their statement, sisters Ballsy, Viel, Pinky, and Kris Aquino confirmed that their brother died “peacefully in his sleep”, and that his death certificate noted his death at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday due to renal disease, secondary to diabetes.
The statement, which was read to the press by Pinky Aquino Abellada, said: “Like the service he gave to the people—not noisy, work from the heart, because he knew, you are his boss. That is why he was known as PNoy, because he did not want to feel that he should be given special attention. He wanted not to be embarrassed by you for encouraging you to follow the right path, even if it is difficult. He did all that.
“It is painful for us that he silently accepted the criticism. Our brothers and sisters were impressed that when we told him to speak up and fight against misconceptions, his answer to us was simple: he can still sleep at night. He faced all the investigations and accusations. Sandiganbayan November 2017, Senate in December 2017, and Congress in February 2018. Because when you enter public service, when you serve with honesty and dignity, and you know you have committed no crime against the people, you will not be afraid to tell the truth.”
Noynoy served as the 15th president of the Philippines, from 2010 to 2016. He was succeeded by current president Rodrigo “Digong” Roa Duterte.
Describing their brother as a “private” person, the Aquino family revealed that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, their brother had been in and out of the hospital due to his illness.
“We would like to thank all the doctors and the entire medical team who took care of our brother. We felt as his brothers that they did everything to make him comfortable. They became compassionate friends who gave him true respect by valuing and protecting his privacy,” the Aquinos said.
“To all his true friends who visited him without fail, texted him, sent him food, accompanied him and protected him, thank you. To the nuns and priests close to our family who prayed tirelessly for his recovery, thank you too. To his troops, to Ivy, and probably number one on the list, Yolly, who took care of him for 30 years, all those who were with him on Times Street since the pandemic, rarely taking off because they knew it was dangerous for him, thank you.
“To the voters of the second district of Tarlac in 1998, you were the first to vote for him. He started with you, he built three terms. To the 14.3 million Filipinos who voted for him to become senator in 2007, and to the 15.2 million Filipinos who trusted him in 2010 and gave him the greatest honor that any Filipino can be given, we will always look back on what you have done for our brother. Thank you, thank you,” they added.
To end their statement, the Aquino sisters said they are blessed to have had the privilege of having had Noynoy as their brother.
“No words can express how broken our hearts are and how long it will take for us to accept the reality that he is gone. Mission accomplished, Noy. Be happy now with dad and mom. We love you and we are so blessed to have had the privilege of having had you as our brother. We will miss you forever, Noy,” they said.
Noynoy was the only son of slain senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and former Philippine president Corazon “Cory” Aquino.
Shortly after his death, local celebrities such as Charo Santos, Liza Soberano, Janine Gutierrez, Ogie Alcasid, Enchong Dee, and Zsa Zsa Padilla took to social media to send their messages of sympathy and prayers to the Aquino family.
