Gerald learned that Linlang, the recently concluded Prime Video series starring Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino, was a hit.
Gerald said it wasn’t surprising because he had witnessed Kim’s hard work from the beginning.
“It’s funny because I heard that they see a different Kim.
“But I’m happy for her because that’s really the perfect word—she’s a hard worker.
“And of course that’s inspiring, right?”
Gerald also mentioned Kim’s being a slob when it comes to being a co-host on the Kapamilya noontime show It’s Showtime.
“That’s just how she is on Showtime, right?
“But that’s great. That’s a fighter. That’s a fighter. And she works really hard.
“So, the success she has now with this show, she deserves it,” he said.
The duo of Kim and Gerald or Kimerald has been known since they entered the entertainment industry after their stint as teen housemates on Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 1 in 2006.
The two eventually got engaged, but they kept their relationship a secret for four years.
This was only made public when they broke up in 2010.
Kim and Gerald reunited in the movie 24/7 In Love in 2012, and in the teleserye Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin in 2017-2018. When asked if it was possible for him to work with Kim again, the actor was unable to answer directly.
Gerald said, “But I can’t answer that. I don’t know. We need to talk to them.”
Gerald was interviewed by select press upon his contract signing with ABS-CBN as a solid Kapamilya. He also remains an artist with Star Magic, ABS-CBN’s talent management arm.
It was held at the Dolphy Theater in the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City on October 26, 2023, but the taped-as-live event was aired on Star Magic YouTube on November 17.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was among those who covered the contract signing.
ON INSTANT STARDOM AFTER PBB STINT
During that press conference, Gerald looked back on the hardships he and Kim went through when they were just starting out in showbiz.
“Kim Chiu and I did Love Spell,” Gerald said of the defunct weekly drama program on ABS-CBN.
“So, it was like we were the first episode there. Sunday, the first episode of Love Spell aired. The ratings were high.”
Gerald recalled that he and Kim were supposed to be in the teleserye Crazy For You in 2006.
He said, “And then, they put us in a teleserye that starred Luis Manzano and Toni Gonzaga, and then there was Sandara Park, I guess.
“So, the taping was Monday. On the set, we were about to tape, when suddenly someone called and sent us home.
“That was it, it was like we were going to star in our own teleserye.”
Gerald admitted that he really changed when he started acting.
She said: “So, our taping back then, Sana Maulit Muli, that was our first teleserye. So, M-W-F.
“So, that was okay, right? But of course, imagine, I’m 17 years old, I’m from GenSan.
“When I came out of PBB, I didn’t know anything about English, I didn’t know how to act.
“I didn’t know what I was doing, I didn’t even know if this was what I really wanted.
“So, I didn’t know what was going on, but just go with the flow.
THE HARD WORK THAT HE AND KIM PUT INTO THEIR CRAFT
Because their duo was successful, he and Kim were really working hard.
“And then, suddenly, a movie came out, First Day High. Do you remember that? So, it was T-Th-S.
“And then, at that time, we had to go ASAP.
“So, every Sunday we were on ASAP, we would leave on Saturday for Tagaytay, because that’s where we were located.
“We would go here to ABS to rehearse, then we would come back for taping.
And then, Sunday, ASAP.”
Gerald was really busy then.
“So, I remember, in our dressing room here in a building. I went to the back, because there was like a hiding place there.
“I cried, I had a breakdown, it was like frustration that I didn’t know what I was doing at work.
“I was so tired, then I was tired, then sometimes there were commercial shoots in between, so I had a breakdown.”
Gerald said his family was the only inspiration to continue working.
The actor looks back: “I asked myself, ‘Why are you here? Why did you join PBB?’
“Honestly, that’s why I joined PBB, because I really wanted to help my mother.
“I wanted to buy a house for my mother, that’s what impressed me.
“So, no matter how tired I am, no matter what we’re going through, even if we’re just going home to cool off, just fight, just fight.
“So, really hard work and perseverance. ON VALUING HIS COLLEAGUES
Gerald also learned the importance of respect for others.
“Actually, just be nice to people.
“At the end of the day, when we’re taping, the cameraman, the PA, the audio guy, everyone, you’re all tired, eh.
“It’s not just the actors, everyone, even the director, is like that. So, it’s like you’re on the same boat.
“So, you should always be considerate of others, respectful, and always nice.”
Gerald continued, “I’m not saying you should be a pushover or that everything is okay with you. But respect, being a good colleague.
“More than when someone tells me, ‘Hey, you’re great there, you’re a great artist,’ ‘you’re nice, you’re a good colleague,’ that’s more fulfilling to me.
“So, I think, that’s also one of the reasons why I’m still here.”
