NBI confirms skeleton found in Palawan is Jovelyn Galleno
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has confirmed that the skeleton found in a forested area in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, is that of 22-year-old Jovelyn Galleno, who was first reported missing.
The NBI conducted a separate investigation into the bones initially found by police due to suspicions raised by Galleno’s relatives. The victim’s remains were said to have decomposed too quickly.
When the skeletons were found in Barangay Pulang Bato in Puerto Princesa, Galleno had been missing for more than two weeks, having last been seen alive when she went to work at a store inside a mall.
According to NBI spokesperson Atty. Giselle Dumlao, they conducted a separate investigation at the crime scene on August 27.
On September 1, their forensic team collected DNA samples to compare with the bones found. It took 13 days for the results to be released.
“The result became available on September 12, 2022 and the result revealed that the DNA profile from the skeletal remain matches with Jovelyn Galleno, based on the profile from its reference or biological parents with a 99.99% probability of relationship,” Dumlao said.
“Since the couple has no other children who are missing or deceased, except for Jovelyn, we can say that it is Jovelyn Galleno,” the official added.
Earlier, Puerto Princesa Police spokesperson Police Captain Maria Victoria Iquin also announced last month that the results of their DNA examination of the skeleton and swab sample from the victim’s mother also matched 99.9%. Galleno’s cousins Leobert Dasmariñas and Jovert Valdestamon are the suspects in the crime, who were charged with rape with homicide.
In a previous report, Valdestamon insisted that he had nothing to do with the crime and that he would prove his innocence in court.
Dasmariñas was able to post bail but he and his family reportedly refused to give a statement.
