Nico Antonio, role in Korean Drama is impressive
Actor Nico Antonio will compete with veteran Korean actors in his performance in the upcoming Korean action series Big Bet, which will be aired worldwide starting Dec. 21 on the Disney+ streaming app.

Nico will be joined by Choi Min Sik (Old Boy), Son Suk-ku (The Outlaws 2), Lee Dong-hwi (The Extreme Job), Heo Sung-tae (Squid Game) and Kim Joo-ryung (Squid Game) in the Disney+ original series about casino king Cha Mu-Sik (Min Sik), who travels the world after being involved in a murder case.

“I’m Mark Flores, a CIDG operative assigned to investigate the ongoing killings of Korean citizens in the Philippines,” said Nico.

It was January of this year when Nico auditioned for Big Bet. All he knew at the time was that he was auditioning for a Korean project.

“I had no idea what I was auditioning for until I had a callback and that was it, none other than director Kang Yoon-sung met with me and explained to me the role,” Nico recalled. “That’s when I also realized that the role I auditioned for was important.”

Nico was the first Filipino actor to be called and cast by director Yoon-sung.

“I saw Nico’s natural acting. I have seen some of Nico’s acting footage and I believe he knows what good acting is about. He knows it,” said Yoon-sung.

In an interview, Yoon-sung revealed that the story of Big Bet was inspired by a Korean casino owner he knew in the country. After meeting the people around him, he thought of creating a story and turning it into a drama series.

“I always wanted to work on a drama series, featuring a long story. And I thought delivering Big Bet with two different parts was an appropriate choice for the viewers to enjoy the series,” said Yoon-sung.

When asked about his experience, Nico described it as “challenging yet fulfilling” especially when you are a Filipino actor who gets to work with some of the most professional actors and most experienced production crews.

“You have to be on your toes always. The actors I work with are all ready when they come to the set.”

Meanwhile, when it comes to working with Min Sik, one of Nico’s most respected actors, he said that he was easy to work with. “You really feel like he is in character, so you have to be attentive to your character.”

Overall, Nico is proud not only of his performance but of all his fellow Filipino actors who were part of Big Bet.

“We are not ashamed. We have raised the Philippine flag,” said Nico.

Even director Yoon-sung is happy with the performance of the Filipino actors, especially Nico. “I’m very happy to work with Filipino actors and staff for three months. I couldn’t make this series without their dedication,” he said. “(Nico) definitely did well. I could imagine who Mark was when Nico first played his role in shooting. He is an amazing actor.”

Big Bet is Nico’s biggest acting break to date after 19 years in showbiz. He started as a talent in Panday starring Jericho Rosales, and continued to play various roles on television and in mainstream and independent cinemas. One of his most memorable roles was the character of Tolayts in the top-rated ABS-CBN series On the Wings of Love.

Unknown to many, Nico studied law at San Beda College and San Sebastian College and graduated with an AB European Studies degree from Ateneo De Manila University.
