Angelica Panganiban chronicles hip replacement surgery
Angelica was in chronic pain for two years due to avascular necrosis.
Angelica Panganiban cried when she was able to walk after undergoing hip replacement surgery on her left hip.

This is related to her long-standing avascular necrosis, which according to clevelandclinic.com, is a “painful bone condition.”

Bone tissue gradually dies due to lack of blood supply, and it has a significant impact on a person’s mobility.

Angelica’s left hip is in stage 3, which according to WebMD.com, “more than a third of the bone’s weight-bearing area is dead.”

From stage 3 onwards, the patient must undergo arthroplasty, a surgery to replace the collapsed bone and cartilage with a prosthetic implant.

This was the most recent treatment for Angelica.

Angelica first went public about her condition in November 2023.

She first felt pain in her body in July 2022—sixth month of her pregnancy.

Angelica said she could not exactly determine whether the pain was in her hips or legs.

Angelica thought at the time that it was just part of her pregnancy.

Angelica gave birth in September 2022, but she noticed that her hips still hurt, especially when carrying her child.

Angelica said she could not just take medication because she was breastfeeding.

Angelica did physical therapy for two months, which although it helped, she said the pain in her hips still came and went.

Until she checked with an orthopedic and then underwent stem cell treatment for her nerves.

After that, she resumed her normal routine—helping with housework, working out, and carrying the baby.

But she should have slowed down her movements.

The pain returned and reached the point where she could barely walk when she went on vacation in Palawan with friends in February 2023. In a vlog she uploaded on November 13, 2023, she said that in October she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis.

Angelica reportedly underwent stem cell treatment again. The difference from her first one was that she had to drill the bones in her left and right hips to be directly injected with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP).

After that, she said that she still had some pain, but she tried to endure it.

December 31, 2023 Angelica married Gregg Homan in Los Angeles, California, USA They remarried in Siargao on April 20, 2024.

HIP CORE DECOMPRESSION SURGERY
Around June 2024, “I was limping when I walked,” Angelica said in her July 13, 2024 vlog.

When she went to the doctor, it was discovered that her left hip had collapsed slightly.

On July 7, Angelica underwent a core decompression procedure.

The doctor explained to her that she could not have hip replacement surgery because she was too young.

According to Angelica’s vlog on July 13, during the core decompression procedure, three holes were drilled in the bone in her left and right hip to “allow blood flow and release tension.”

She was given a bone marrow transplant, and bone stimulants and PRP were administered to help delay the collapse of her hip.

But it still didn’t work to relieve Angelica’s chronic pain. ANGELICA PANGANIBAN UNDERGOES HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY

In her vlog on October 19, 2024, Angelica detailed what she went through before and after her hip replacement surgery.

October 9 was when she was confined to the hospital.

Before the surgery, she said that she had been feeling “24/7 chronic pain” for two years.

She said, “I had core decompression on both hips, but it didn’t help me especially on my left hips.

“It made my left hip collapse faster.”

Angelica was advised to take bed rest for two months.

She said: “But after a month of bed rest, we went back to the doctor, I am explaining nothing happened. I feel worse.

“The doctor said, I’ll just endure it. I’ll give myself five years before I get a hip replacement.

“I can’t endure it. You’ve already lost your illness, so I’ll just lay you down? I’ll just lay you down for five years? Or will I let my son grow up and just watch him play?

“That’s possible, there’s a way.

“Because if there’s no way and that’s my situation, then I have no choice, I’ll accept it. But if there’s a way, I can’t accept it.”

Angelica is determined that the solution to her illness is to undergo hip replacement surgery, against her doctor’s advice.

She said she did a lot of research.

Along with Angelica’s illness, she was also mourning the death of her mother on August 20. What she thought at the time was, “Since Mama died suddenly, it clicked in my mind, ‘Oh wow, life is so fast.’

“I won’t let something happen to me that I have so many regrets.”

She said she wanted to go to Thailand for treatment, but apart from “not being able to afford the budget,” she said she couldn’t bear to stay in another country for a month without being with her child.

Until Angelica found a doctor here in the country who said she could undergo hip replacement surgery.

“Maybe Mama in heaven really whispered to the Lord, ‘Please, give me my child. Put her in good hands because she’s already in such a difficult situation.’

“So, here I am now.”

In her vlog, it can be seen that Angelica is still with her husband Gregg Homan, who has been patiently taking care of her since she got sick.

Aside from massaging Angelica’s painful body parts, Gregg is also the one who gives Angelica courage.

Angelica even teases Gregg when he is scared for her.

But what Gregg always says—even during Angelica’s core decompression surgery—is that he is confident that the actress’s surgery will go well.

Angelica admitted that she felt scared and nervous during her hip replacement surgery.

“For the first time, you don’t have a mother to calm your heart, but of course we’ll fight,” she said.

The actress added, “I am thinking the worst.

“I never had these thoughts when I had surgery three months ago.

“I’m excited if it will be better… Because this is the last step.”

Just five hours ago, Angelica was visited by her doctor and physical therapist in her private room.

Gradually, her legs were moved, and then the physical therapist helped her stand up using a walker.

When the doctor asked if she had pain in her left hip, Angelica smiled and replied, “No more.”

The doctor exclaimed, “It’s a brand-new hip!” Angelica later announced that she had been able to go to the emergency room with the help of Gregg and the nanny.

She said in the vlog that she never thought that the pain in her left hip would go away and that she would be able to walk just five hours after the surgery.

Angelica stayed in the hospital for a few days for her Physical Therapy (PT), where she was supported in walking and climbing a few flights of stairs.

On Day 4 of her post-surgery, Angelica said: “I don’t feel any more migraine-causing pain, pain that interferes with my behavior.

“I feel like I was beaten by a sumo wrestler now. But you see, two days after the surgery I was able to walk.

“Remove the stigma of hip replacement patients who can’t walk, [that’s] the end of the road for them.

“This is an extension of your quality of life, really.”

Laughing but also emotional, she said, “I’m excited to get my life back, my son can play, be nice to Gregg.

“I was nice when he met me. I’m not rude.”

In the last round of her PT, Angelica tried walking without a walker for the first time.

She couldn’t help but get emotional.

She remembered the hardships she had gone through since being diagnosed with avascular necrosis until now when she was able to move without any pain.

Greg asked, “Why are you crying?”

Angelica replied, “I’m happy… The pain is gone, huh.”

ANGELICA: “LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.”
Finally, Angelica shared what she learned from her ordeal.

“Finally, we came to the point where it was okay, it was resolved, I had a hip replacement,” she said.

“We found a very good doctor who considered my quality of life, the moments and milestones that I was missing because I was confined to my room for a whole year now.

“Since October when I was diagnosed last year, I’ve been in and out of my room. I’ve been given injections, I’ve been put on bed rest.

“That didn’t go well for me. It affected my mental health. It affected my relationship with my family and friends.”

Angelica’s advice is that it’s important to study the situation carefully, and find a doctor who is not only an expert but also has compassion and will listen to the patient’s concerns.

Not only can she not engage in high-impact sports because of her ceramic hip, but she is not an athlete so that is not an issue for her. Angelica hopes that the comfort she feels will continue, and that hip revision will not be necessary.

She hopes that her ceramic hip will last more than 20 years, based on the experience of those who have undergone hip replacement surgery.

Angelica’s right hip is in stage 2 of avascular necrosis so it does not need to be replaced yet.

“Even if it is just a few years. If it collapses [right hip], let’s just do it again.”

“No, we were given this pain,” said Angelica, who said that the exact cause of her pain has not been determined.

She added, “I am done with denial. I am done with anger. We are now in acceptance.”

Angelica thanked everyone who helped her and prayed for her recovery.Angelica Panganiban in her walker after hip replacement surgery
