Naniniwala ang ama ni Deniece Cornejo na si Paul “Dennis” Cornejo na biktima ng “trial by publicity” ang kanyang anak.
Nahatulan ng habambuhay na pagkabilanggo si Deniece dahil napatunayan ng Taguig Regional Trial Court Branch 153 na may sala sa kasong serious illegal detention for ransom na isinampa ng komedyante at TV host na si Vhong Navarro.
Kasamang nahatulan ni Deniece ang mga kapwa niya akusadong sina Cedric Lee, Simeon Raz, at Ferdinand Guerrero.
“Trial by publicity ang nangyari sa amin, e. Kami, mga simpleng tao lang kaya durog na durog kami talaga.
“Pero kami naman, nirerespeto namin kung ano ang magiging desisyon [ng korte],” pahayag ni Dennis sa eksklusibong panayam sa kanya ng Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP.ph) noong Lunes, Mayo 12, 2024.
Patuloy niya: “It was very, very painful na ganoon ang magiging result. Masyadong masakit sa part namin.
“At kaya tumagal ng ten years yan, siyempre nagkaroon ng COVID, so na-extend nang na-extend.
“Deniece texted me na there will be a promulgation on May 2 so I told her, ‘Good luck and keep her faith. Whatever happens, let’s accept it.’
“Ang wala sa isip ko, yung serious illegal detention for ransom.
“Kasi noong 2014, serious illegal detention lang ang pinaglabanan. Ngayon, nadagdagan ng ransom.
“From the day it happened, talagang dala-dala ko ang burden. Dala-dala ko yan— yung galit, yung lungkot, and everything.
“Pero ang nagpapalakas sa akin, yung faith ko sa Diyos.”
