This Fil-Canadian kid was lauded by American Idol judges

American Idol Season 21 – Tyson Venegas, a 17-year-old Filipino-Canadian aspiring singer, impressed judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

The young man performed the song New York State of Mind by Billy Joel. Aside from his impressive vocals, Tyson also showcased his talent in playing the piano. A few moments after he started his performance, Lionel was already seen enjoying what he was watching.

Seconds passed by and Katy said to Lionel that he is already getting goosebumps while Luke was listening and looking at Tyson intently. There was a portion in the performance when the American Idol judges talked to each other closely and Luke can be heard saying “yup.” Then, the platinum ticket was shown.

After the performance, Lionel asked Tyson if his mother was close by the door because he wanted to bring her up. When Tyson’s mother entered the audition area, Lionel asked her if Tyson is really her son and if it was true that he is just 17 years old.

“He’s claiming to be 17 years old, but he’s performing like a 45-year-old,” the singer said. Tyson’s mom shared that her son’s first-ever concert was Lionel Richie and that inspired him to be a singer.

“We’ve flipped the switch now. I inspired him back then—he just inspired us today. Let me tell you, that performance was spot-on professional,” Lionel answered. Katy also commended the young performer. “You sang notes and runs that I haven’t felt in my body in a long time, and I felt so connected. I felt alive,” she said.

Luke added that Tyson is someone that American Idol is really looking for. With this, the 17-year-old Filipino-Canadian got the Platinum Ticket which means that he will skip the first round of Hollywood Week.
