Awra Briguela received the backing of her university’s student council after she encountered gender discrimination for wearing the school uniform for females when she began her education at the University of the East (UE).

On Monday, Oct. 7, Briguela re-shared the student council’s official statement on the backlash she received from the public for her choice of school uniform.

“Recently, we’ve become aware of the backlash surrounding Awra Briguela’s post that showed her choice of uniform. It is important to note that UE is committed to fostering an inclusive atmosphere where LGBTQIA+ members are respected,” read in part of the statement.

After re-posting the statement, Briguela shared a clip of herself seated in a car, seemingly teary-eyed. She added a prayer emoji and a red heart in her caption.

One week ago, the young actress-comedian shared a video of herself on Instagram as she showed off her new uniform. In the comments section of her post, netizens expressed their various reactions.

“I have no issues [with you] being gay. But you should wear a proper uniform according to your sexuality. Just saying. No prejudice,” said one IG user.

“Are you not ashamed [of] wearing [a] girl’s uniform?? Knowing that you’re not a real woman? A living example of well educated but not totally mannered,” wrote another netizen.

Last year, Briguela made headlines after she was involved in a brawl outside a bar in Makati for which she was arrested and detained. She was released on bail a few days later.

In July, the internet personality shared that she does not go to parties anymore in view of the controversy that she got previously involved in.

Briguela also affirmed in an interview that she’s in a “better state” now after owning up to the consequences of her previous actions.
