Darryl Yap Reveals: No Legal Violation in Vic Sotto’s Cyberlibel Case Over Pepsi Paloma Movie (an)

Filmmaker Darryl Yap has publicly addressed the ongoing legal battle involving actor and television host Vic Sotto, who filed a cyberlibel case against him concerning Yap’s upcoming film Pepsi Paloma: The Movie. In a statement, Yap defended the movie’s portrayal of real-life events, including those surrounding the late actress Pepsi Paloma, and claimed that there has been no violation of the law in the making of the film or in his actions.

According to Yap, the movie is a creative piece of work based on public records and historical accounts, particularly focusing on the controversial life and tragic death of Pepsi Paloma. Yap emphasized that the film is intended to bring awareness to the injustices Paloma allegedly faced during her time in the entertainment industry, as well as to shed light on her untold story. He stressed that his artistic vision should not be mistaken for libelous intent, as he claims he followed legal processes and standards in the film’s production.

Yap’s remarks come after Vic Sotto filed a cyberlibel case against him, accusing the filmmaker of defaming his character in the film. Sotto’s legal team argued that the movie’s portrayal of the actor, especially in relation to the allegations made against him in the 1980s regarding Pepsi Paloma, was harmful and damaging to his reputation.

However, Yap asserts that no laws were broken in the creation of Pepsi Paloma: The Movie. He pointed out that the film does not outright accuse anyone of criminal acts, but rather explores the events that occurred during the time of Pepsi Paloma’s career. He also mentioned that the film does not present anything that has not already been publicly discussed in the media over the years.

At this stage, Yap is confident that the case will not hold up in court, asserting that his film is legally sound and that freedom of expression, particularly in the realm of filmmaking, should be respected. He has also expressed his willingness to cooperate with any legal inquiries and clarified that the intention behind the film was never to destroy reputations but to tell a meaningful and compelling story.

As the legal proceedings continue, both sides will present their arguments in court, and the outcome could potentially set a precedent for future cases involving the portrayal of real-life individuals in movies, particularly when it comes to balancing creative freedom and protection of one’s reputation.

The controversy surrounding the film has sparked heated discussions within the entertainment industry, particularly regarding the ethical responsibilities filmmakers have when producing biographical content. Fans and industry professionals are closely watching how this case will unfold.
