One of the most electrifying rivalries in recent PBA playoff history is set to reignite in the Season 49 Governors’ Cup quarterfinals, featuring two formidable teams showcasing a remarkable total of six Best Import awards between their leading reinforcements.

The reigning Philippine Cup champions, Meralco, will face off against fan favorites Barangay Ginebra, as they aim to secure a coveted spot in the semifinals in a thrilling best-of-five series that kicks off this Thursday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

This matchup marks the eighth postseason confrontation between these two teams since 2016, and the fourth featuring the iconic duo of Justin Brownlee and Allen Durham at the forefront.

Brownlee and the Gin Kings have historically outperformed Durham and the Bolts in three championship encounters during the 2016, 2017, and 2019 Governors’ Cups. Additionally, Brownlee triumphed over a different Meralco import in their quarterfinal showdown during the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup.

The local talents of Ginebra extended their dominance over their Meralco counterparts during their next clash in the 2020 Philippine Cup bubble semifinals. However, the Bolts managed to reverse the tide in their subsequent meeting, clinching a 2-1 victory in the 2022 All-Filipino series. They further solidified their ascent by overcoming the Gin Kings in a nail-biting Final Four battle last season, winning 4-3 en route to claiming their first PBA championship.

Tip-off is set for 5 p.m., promising an evening filled with intensity.

As the Gin Kings and Bolts clash once again, both teams will showcase some fresh faces not present during their last encounter.

Under the leadership of coach Tim Cone, Ginebra has made significant roster changes, parting ways with Christian Standhardinger and Stanley Pringle in the offseason to bring in Stephen Holt. Additionally, rookie RJ Abarrientos has been recruited to bolster the Scottie Thompson-led backcourt, while the previously retired Joe DeVance has been reactivated to provide support to Japeth Aguilar in the frontcourt.

Meanwhile, Meralco introduces an exciting newcomer in CJ Cansino, who joins a talented local roster alongside seasoned leaders Chris Newsome, Chris Banchero, Cliff Hodge, Bong Quinto, and the returning Allein Maliksi.
