Paul Scholes delivers one of the most scathing assessments of Erik ten Hag yet as doubts remain over his Man Utd future

The former Manchester United midfielder did not hold back.

Paul Scholes has described Manchester United as an “uncoached team” with no approach as Erik ten Hag’s future hangs in the balance.

He may have extended his United contract in July after a summer review but Ten Hag is under a serious amount of pressure following Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Spurs.

The Dutch manager will remain in charge for upcoming fixtures against FC Porto and Aston Villa this week, according to widespread reports.

But the pressure is on after a poor start to the campaign featuring two wins from a possible six in the league.

The fallout from Sunday’s game at Old Trafford is still ongoing, with many having their say on United’s lacklustre performances of late, including club legend Paul Scholes.

In the aftermath of their defeat against Spurs, the former midfielder ripped into his former side.

“You don’t know how they’re going to play,” he told SuperSport. “You don’t know how they’re going to approach games, whether they are going to play on the counter-attack or sit deep or whether they’re going to try to have all the possession in the game. We’ve no idea.

“They look like an uncoached football team. We’re two and a bit years in now… from the first week Ange Postecoglou went in, we probably knew what Tottenham were doing and they’re doing it to this day. We’re two and a bit years down the road [with Ten Hag at United].

“And as I said, it’s an uncoached team. The players looked dead today, they looked flat and they looked like they were thinking ‘I don’t know what to do’. There’s no enthusiasm for the game of football and that can only come from the training pitch.”

Scholes went on to criticise United’s business in the summer window after the club splashed more than £150 million on new players.

He added: “Some of the positions that people take up on the pitch, it’s just madness at times. When you bring players in, you expect them to be a lot better than who you’ve already got.

“I don’t see players coming in who are a big difference. De Ligt has come in for Maguire, let’s say, but there’s no big difference there. These are experienced players who United have paid a lot of money for.

“We need to stop hearing excuses and get on that training pitch and find a way of playing. Find something, give us something.”
