Eric Cantona has hit out at INEOS’ decision to axe Sir Alex Ferguson from his Manchester United contract.
Ferguson is to step down from his Man United ambassadorial role at the end of the season.
INEOS has continued their cost-cutting programme by ending a multi-million pound annual commitment to Ferguson, who returned to the club as a global ambassador and club director and remunerated with an annual salary.
It is understood that the decision, which took place in a face-to-face meeting, was made amicably and the 82-year-old will always be welcome at Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has carried out a ruthless redundancy programme leading to the loss of 250 jobs – with the Scot the biggest casualty by some distance.
But INEOS’ decision to terminate Ferguson’s contract has angered Cantona, who played under the legendary manager during his memorable stint at Man United.
On social media, he shared a picture of himself alongside Ferguson, accompanied with the caption: “Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do anything he wants at the club until the day he dies. Such a lack of respect. It’s totally scandalous. Sir Alex Ferguson will be my boss forever! And I throw them all in a big bag of sh*t!”

Cantona enjoyed five seasons at Man United under Ferguson’s tutelage.
He won four Premier League titles and two FA Cups during his time with the Red Devils.
Ferguson was appointed manager of Man United back in November 1986 and retired in 2013 after guiding them to league glory in the 2012/13 season.
Man United won 13 league titles, five FA Cups, two Champions League and four League Cups in Ferguson’s legendary 27-year spell as manager.
