She TAUNTED Caitlin Clark, But FACED a CRUSHING DEFEAT!
Caitlin Clark has faced her fair share of challenges in her short time in the WNBA. Despite proving her doubters wrong, she continues to face criticism. One notable moment came during a game between the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun in June. The Sun dominated the game, with DiJonai Carrington leading the charge. With about three and a half minutes left, Carrington was called for a foul after bumping Clark as she attempted to drive to the basket. Clark was sent to the line for two free throws, but what happened next shocked everyone. Carrington mocked Clark, insinuating that she had flopped. Clark made both free throws, but the Fever still trailed by 20 points at halftime and eventually lost the game by 17. Clark finished with just 10 points and two assists, marking one of her worst performances in the league.
The post-game press conference added fuel to the fire when Ty Harris, a Sun player, made a comment referencing “seatbelt season,” seemingly mocking Clark’s struggles. This incident sparked social media chatter, but many moved on as the season continued. However, Clark didn’t forget.
Months later, the Fever faced the Sun again. The Sun had already won three straight games against the Fever, giving Clark and her teammates extra motivation. This time, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles were in attendance to watch Clark play. Early on, Clark struggled to get going, but she eventually found her rhythm, making Carrington look foolish with a crossover and hitting a three-pointer. As the game progressed, Clark showcased her playmaking abilities, setting up teammates like Aaliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell with key passes.
Clark did face some foul trouble, forcing her to sit for part of the game, but when she returned, she began to heat up. She hit back-to-back threes, including a deep shot over Carrington. In the fourth quarter, the Fever clung to a narrow lead, and Clark took control. With just over a minute left and the game on the line, Clark drove to the basket, scoring a crucial layup. The Fever held on to win 84-80, giving Clark a sense of revenge after the previous loss.
Carrington finished with 19 points and six steals but struggled from beyond the arc when it mattered most. Clark matched Carrington with 19 points, adding five rebounds and five assists. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 23 points, helping take some of the defensive pressure off Clark.
After the game, Carrington expressed her frustration on social media, calling Fever fans “nasty.” Fans quickly clapped back, accusing her of being a sore loser. Although the regular season matchups between these two teams are over, the tension remains, and this rivalry could heat up even more in the playoffs or in future seasons.
