Prince Harry’s blunt six-word response when asked to give up his and Meghan’s royal titles

Prince Harry had a rather blunt response when asked why he and Meghan Markle continue to use their royal titles after stepping down from duties in 2020.

Prince Harry reportedly had a very blunt response when asked why he and Meghan Markle continue to use their royal titles.

Despite stepping down as senior working royals in 2020, both Harry and his wife Meghan Markle still continue to use their Sussex title.

Many experts and fans alike have questioned why the royals have not stripped them of their titles “at the highest level”, with Harry asked outright about the title dilemma in an interview with Anderson Cooper.

While promoting his bombshell memoir Spare last year, the Duke was asked why he and Meghan had chosen not to give up their titles, to which he replied: “And what difference would that make?”

Mr Cooper added: “One of the criticisms that you’ve received is that okay, fine, you want to move to California, you want to step back from the institutional role. Why be so public?

Harry then responded firmly: “And every single time I’ve tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife. You know, the family motto is ‘never complain, never explain’. But it’s just a motto. And it doesn’t really hold.”

Although Harry still remains fifth in line to the royal throne, with his two children being sixth and seventh in the line of succession, Harry is no longer addressed as his royal highness (HRH). Harry, who will celebrate his 40th birthday next week, also gave up his military titles after stepping down from royal duty in 2020.

Almost two years on from the release of Spare, Harry is still at loggerheards with the Royal Family – most notably his father and brother.

Today marks the second anniversary of his late beloved grandmother’s death – a day which Paul Burrell said he will likely spend away from his family.

Speaking of the feud in 2023, Mr Burrell said: “Why would they want to embrace him on a day which is very close to their hearts? I don’t think he will [be invited to private commemorations].

“I think the Royal Family have pulled the drawbridge up and they are combining forces now and sticking together because they’re hurt, they feel hurt by his comments in many different outlets now.”
