Ever since the Magpasikat tradition started in 2010 as a festive way to celebrate the anniversary of “It’s Showtime,” it has become one of the most highly anticipated events of the noontime show every year.
Solid Showtimers certainly know that it started out as a straightforward showcase of the hosts’ talent and creativity. But as the years go by, it has eventually evolved into a cordial, advocacy-driven showdown in which the hosts—who are split up into five groups and designated to perform on different days—must prepare magnificent performances aimed at stirring the spectators with the inspiring, relevant, and impactful messages that they hope to convey.
And the recently concluded Magpasikat 2024 weeklong, enormous celebration was absolutely not an exception, as the madlang people witnessed five spectacular acts that captivated all of us in different ways. But we can all agree that among the highlights of every number are the extreme stunts that the “It’s Showtime” hosts did that probably left our mouths agape and kept our eyes glued to the screen.
In this Showtime Toplist, let’s revisit the buwis-buhay routines executed by the “It’s Showtime” hosts during their respective groups’ performances in the latest edition of the annual fete!
Aiming to remind everyone to “tigil, hinga, kalma” (or pause, breathe, and calm down) whenever we feel exhausted in the hustles, bustles, and struggles of life, Team Ogie-Kim-MC-Lassy indeed succeeded not just in delivering the valuable message that they’ve been meaning to convey, but also in astonishing us with their exhilarating and poignant presentation. Thus, there’s no definitely no doubt that they were hailed as the grand champion of Magpasikat 2024.
It was group leader Ogie Alcasid who was the first one to wow us with his spinning piano number. Instead of simply showcasing his chops in singing and playing the piano as he poured his heart out in an original composition that tackled his insecurities as a veteran artist, the OPM hitmaker turned his set extra exciting by having himself strapped onto his chair as the platform he was on gradually rose, tilted, and spun him.
Succeeding him was the comedic duo of MC Mwah and Lassy Marquez, who were able to prove that there’s absolutely more to them than being jesters. Apart from exhibiting their dramatic flair as they gave us a glimpse of the lives of stand-up comedians like them beyond the stage and the camera, they also exuded courage and confidence through their aerial cube act.
Arguably the icing on their cake was Kim Chiu’s breathtaking acrobatic stunts, which include dancing mid-air while attached to a harness and doing flying trapeze across the studio, while their sole celebrity guest, Morissette Amon, rendered Sarah Geronimo’s “Isa Pang Araw.” It served as her unique way to communicate how worn out she has been trying to meet the expectations of her “entitled audiences,” who still think she is inadequate despite already exerting her all and doing her best in everything that she does.
The third group to perform was Team Vhong-Ion-Darren-Amy, a.k.a. Team VIDA, which chose to feature death in their Magpasikat 2024 entry. Amy Perez, Darren Espanto, and Ion Perez portrayed mother-and-sons who were struck by a tragedy during a devastating super typhoon, with team leader Vhong Navarro playing grim reaper or tagasundo.
While the four of them had respective sets through which they’re able to showcase their talents, the one that astonished us the most was the death-defying act of Ion on a metal frame attached to the ceiling of the studio, which he did without wearing a harness or any safety gear. We could only just imagine the jitters felt by everyone watching him, particularly his spouse, Vice Ganda, who was then in the front row seat alongside their co-hosts.
Team Anne-Jugs-Teddy was the fourth to showcase their “feel good” presentation that featured the nation’s girl group BINI, and they were scheduled exactly on “It’s Showtime”s anniversary on October 24. As solid Showtimers know, every Magpasikat performance of Anne Curtis would never be complete without her doing any exhilarating stunt, until she decided to quite tone down her being a daredevil when she became a mom. And this year, aside from doing an interpretative dance at the beginning of their number and singing alongside BINI, she wowed everyone with her enthralling stunts while singing at a suspended diamond metal frame.
Last, but definitely not least, was Team Jhong-Jackie-Cianne, which didn’t put the excitement of everyone to waste as the final group for this year’s Magpasikat by delivering a totally moving and gripping performance that aimed to promote mental health awareness.
Jackie Gonzaga initially engrossed us with her aerial rope routine opposite GMA 7 actor Kokoy de Santos, then went on to astonish us with her circus act in the “wheel of death.” Apart from her acting, dancing, and singing prowess, Cianne Dominguez also wowed everyone when she took on the “wheel of death,” which their team leader Jhong Hilario also conquered.
Which among these extreme stunts done by the “It’s Showtime” hosts amazed you the most, madlang people?
