Barbie Hsu’s Ashes Face Opposition at Home, Family Forced to Make Heartbreaking Burial Decision

On February 8, China Times reported that Dee Hsu made an announcement. She stated that her late sister’s ashes would soon be buried in accordance with Taiwan’s official burial regulations. The family is currently applying for an eco-friendly resting place for Barbie Hsu through local authorities.

Dee Hsu stated that Barbie had expressed this wish during her lifetime, and the family also shares the same desire. “My sister’s ashes are only being temporarily kept at her home. Soon, our family will return her to nature,” Dee Hsu stated.

It remains unclear which eco-burial method the family will choose: whether scattering the ashes on soil, placing the urn in a tree, or burying the urn beneath a tree.

According to China Times, the decision to bring Barbie Hsu’s ashes home to her luxury apartment in Taipei’s Xinyi District without an official burial ceremony has sparked strong backlash from neighbors.

Since February 5, the family has received numerous petitions from surrounding residents. Some neighbors even publicly criticized Dee Hsu, calling her selfish, “Are public figures always this self-centered? If Dee Hsu loved her sister so much, why didn’t she bring the ashes to her own home instead of placing them in a residential complex? They don’t seem to care whether this is a home or a cemetery. If it were their private villa, they could place ten urns there, and no one would care. But please, don’t let your selfishness affect the quality of life of other residents.”

On social media, Chinese netizens expressed sorrow that even after her passing, Barbie Hsu remains entangled in controversy. However, many agreed that arranging a proper burial for her ashes is the right decision. Firstly, traditional Taiwanese beliefs regard keeping a deceased person’s ashes at home as bad luck and harmful to the feng shui and well-being of the living. Secondly, having a specific burial site would allow fans to visit and pay their respects to Barbie Hsu annually.

Barbie Hsu’s body was cremated in Japan on February 3. On February 5, her husband, Koo Jun-yup, and her family brought her ashes back to Taiwan via private jet. Previously, Dee Hsu had expressed her desire to keep her sister’s ashes at home so that Barbie would not be lonely, and so she could talk to her whenever she had time.
