Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital, adapted from the South Korean box-office hit Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, has unveiled its first clip, capturing the attention of Hollywood entertainment site Variety.
The Philippine adaptation is top-billed by Enrique Gil with Jane De Leon, Alexa Miro, Rob Gomez, and MJ Lastimosa.
Also joining the cast are Raf Pineda, a real-life tarot reader, and Ryan “Zarckaroo” Azurin, a video creator renowned for capturing authentic footage of some of the region’s most haunted and unusual locations.
Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer HospitaL VS Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
The Filipino cast portrays amateur ghost hunters playing fictionalized versions of themselves as they venture into Taiwan’s infamous Xinglin Hospital, an abandoned site in the West Central District.
Known for its persistent paranormal activity, the hospital is considered one of the most haunted locations by locals.
The original Korean version, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, is a 2018 found footage horror film directed by Jung Bum-shik.
Set in an actual psychiatric hospital in Gwangju-si, the film starred Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), Park Ji-hyun (The Divine Fury), Oh Ah-yeon (Mr. Sunshine), Moon Ye-won (Legal High), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory, Queen of Tears), Yoo Je-yoon (Extreme Job), and Lee Seung-wook (Joseon Fist).
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum was a commercial success in South Korea, attracting over 2.6 million viewers and grossing $21 million, making it the second-highest grossing Korean horror film of 2018.
AN MMFF ENTRY
Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital has recently been announced as Reality MM Studios’ official entry to the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). It opens on December 25, 2024, in the Philippines.
Behind the film, in partnership with Enrique, are director Erik Matti and producer Dondon Monteverde, the same duo known for critically acclaimed films On the Job (2013), Honor Thy Father (2015), Seklusyon (2016), BuyBust (2018), and Kuwaresma (2019).
Dubbed as the Philippines’ very first meta found footage horror film, audiences and critics alike are already looking forward to this reimagined style of filming technique.
