Last Saturday, July 1, Vice Ganda left viewers deeply moved as she emotionally reflected on her own engagement story with her partner, Ion Perez, on Everybody, Sing!. During an episode where she interacted with a couple from the “songbayanan” made up of engaged couples, Vice shared her heartfelt thoughts on the emotions she felt when Ion proposed to her, revealing a side of her that many of her fans hadn’t seen before.
While speaking to the engaged couple, Vice couldn’t help but recall her own experience of being asked to marry Ion. The moment was both beautiful and overwhelming for her, and as she shared her story, it became clear that it wasn’t just a simple moment of joy for the comedian. In fact, Vice confessed that she felt a mixture of fear and insecurity when Ion first asked for her hand in marriage.
“I was jealous because I didn’t feel what they’re feeling. I got frustrated because I allowed fear to rob me of the happiness I should have felt in that moment,” Vice tearfully admitted, her voice filled with emotion. For Vice, the moment that should have been filled with pure joy was instead clouded by fear of judgment, a common experience for many LGBTQIA+ couples.
With a trembling voice, she continued, “There were so many things being said to us by others, and I felt robbed of joy. It’s like what you guys are going through, right? Being normal feels so sweet. People think of it as normal when it’s between a man and a woman, but for us, it’s not the same. The way people view us is different, and it was so painful.”
In that raw moment, Vice revealed the struggles she faced as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Her emotions spilled over as she reflected on the stigma and lack of acceptance that LGBTQIA+ couples often face, particularly when it comes to life milestones like engagements and marriages. She shared how, when Ion proposed, she feared the backlash and negativity they would receive from the public, especially Ion, who had been so vulnerable in sharing his love for her.
“Back then, I asked my friends to delete the footage of the engagement,” Vice revealed, choking back tears. “I was scared of what people would say, and I didn’t want Ion to get hurt. But now, I’ve moved past that fear, and I’ve grown. I don’t care anymore about what others think. What matters now is that all my care, my attention, my love, and everything I have goes to Ion and the love we share.”
Her candid confession resonated deeply with viewers, as it highlighted the personal struggles faced by many LGBTQIA+ individuals who are often forced to navigate their relationships in a society that can be less than accepting. Vice’s journey from fear to acceptance was both empowering and inspiring. Through her openness, she showed that love, no matter who it’s between, is always valid, and that living authentically without the burden of fear is something worth fighting for.
In a beautiful display of courage, Vice concluded that her relationship with Ion is now one where love and understanding come first. “I don’t fear anymore, and I don’t care about the judgment of others. What matters now is that Ion and I are happy. Our love is real, and that’s all that matters to me,” Vice shared, a look of contentment and peace in her eyes.
Meanwhile, the engaged couple from the “songbayanan” did not win the P2 million jackpot prize but were still able to walk away with P290,000 in winnings, a consolation that left them grateful despite the loss. The heartfelt exchange between Vice and the couple added a touch of emotion to the show, making it not just a fun game but also a moment of reflection and understanding about the challenges faced by couples in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Vice’s story reminds us all that love, in its purest form, should never be marred by fear or judgment. Her emotional journey of overcoming her anxieties and embracing her love for Ion is a powerful testament to the importance of self-acceptance and the courage it takes to live one’s truth.
