It was an easy choice for Scholes – despite all the iconic players he played alongside.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes didn’t hesitate when naming his greatest team-mate.

Scholes spent his entire club career at United, with the midfielder being one of the six ‘Class of 92’ players to be promoted to the first team without going out on loan.

He would go on to win a staggering 24 trophies across his first spell at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson before retiring in 2011.

Scholes then came out of retirement a year later, adding Premier League title number 11 to his CV.

He played alongside some of the greatest players to kick a football, including Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Denis Irwin.

But when it came to picking his greatest ever team-mate, there was only one man in the frame for the legendary midfielder.

“Ryan Giggs,” he told MUTV in 2020. “Easy one.

“You play with so many great, great players, and you’re lucky enough to play with so many players.

“As a midfielder, I always felt wide players and number 10s, they’re the ones that win you games.

“And the players I, as a midfield player, liked to link with, I go back to Teddy [Sheringham] and Yorkie [Dwight Yorke] – brilliant players. I had a real understanding with them.

“I played a season at No 10 or half at No 10 and a little bit on the left hand side, because Giggsy was injured, with Ruud van Nistelrooy. And a loved that, because just having that link with a player, you know what each other wants.

“That’s what makes a good team, I suppose.”

Like Scholes, Giggs was a part of the infamous ‘Class of 92’, and holds a series of records for both United and the Premier League as a whole.

He holds the Premier League record for most assists with 162, and his 963 appearances for United are more than any other Red Devils player in history.

Giggs retired in 2014 at the age of 40, ending a 24-year playing career.
