What’s with the Labubu that made lots of famous personalities go crazy about it?
In 2023, the Philippines was crazy about the Sonny Angels, and in 2024, we are crazy about Labubu, a plush toy with nine sharp teeth. This is especially famous in Southeast Asia and when we say famous, it’s extreme that when limited-edition Labubu toys were produced in Singapore, the fans scrambled that police force was needed to mediate the heightened situation.
This plush toy has a playful and slightly fierce look. This is an elvish, furry creature from Nordic mythology, and according to the creator, European fairy tales inspire them and originally, they were created as little monsters for a children’s book series.
Hong Kong-born artist raised in the Netherlands Kasing Lung is behind Labubu. The characters belong to Monsters and have been existing since 2015 but it was only in 2019 when the toy took off. The breakthrough was through a partnership with Pop Mart.

Celebrities like Heart Evangelista, Marian Rivera and Vice Ganda have all jumped to the bandwagon.
In a vlog, Vice Ganda shared his newly-purchased Version 2 of Labubu and expressed how much he loves them. One of them even made it to It’s Showtime and the comedian was seen carrying a bigger version in the program. The smaller versions are seen dangling on his luxury bags.
Heart Evangelista also has a collection of Labubu dolls. She and her friends went shopping for the popular Pop Mart blind boxes and among her purchases was the Labubu plushie from The Monsters collection.
