MANILA (UPDATED) — It took Marcio Lassiter less than five minutes to rewrite PBA history on Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
At the 7:10 mark of the first quarter of San Miguel’s showdown against Barangay Ginebra in the 2024 PBA Governors’ Cup, Lassiter sank his third three-pointer of the game — the bucket that officially made him the league’s new three-point king.
It was Lassiter’s 1,251st three-pointer in his career, surpassing the mark set by the iconic Jimmy Alapag in 2016 when he was playing for the Meralco Bolts.
Lassiter entered the game needing three three-pointers to break the record and he got the job done in the first quarter, drilling his first triple at the 11:18 mark and his second with 7:40 left.
After sinking the record-breaking trey, Lassiter added another at the 5:46 mark to give the Beermen a 23-7 lead against the Gin Kings. He finished with 18 points built on six three-pointers as in San Miguel’s 131-82 triumph.
“I’m just truly honored and blessed to be in this position, and yeah, words can’t describe how I feel. I’m just overwhelmed with a lot of emotions right now,” the guard said after the contest.
He was recognized for the achievement at the halftime of the game, with his family joining him in a brief ceremony.
Afterward, Lassiter deflected the credit to his coach, Jorge Gallent, and his teammates — notably June Mar Fajardo and Chris Ross.
“Coach Jorge is a tremendous coach, giving me the confidence every night to come out and showcase my talents. He’s drawing great plays for me,” said Lassiter.
“And also my teammates, I definitely couldn’t do this without my teammates from the past and right now. They helped me out with so much, especially, I feel like the main two that probably gave me the most assists are June Mar and Chris,” he added. “So I gotta thank them.”
Gallent noted that they went out with the intent of helping Lassiter get the record.
“It was all energy, and that’s what the players said before we went out, we just wanted to help Marcio get this one off his back. He had six, I think so I’m very happy for him. I’m very blessed to be his coach,” he said.
Lassiter, 37, had surpassed the great Allan Caidic in San Miguel’s previous game, a 119-114 win against NLEX last Wednesday.
MANILA — San Miguel overpowered Barangay Ginebra, 131-82, on Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum as veteran guard Marcio Lassiter wrote his name in the history books as the PBA’s three-point king.
Behind four three-pointers from Lassiter in the opening frame, San Miguel raced to a 37-13 start and were never threatened as they claimed their sixth win in Group B.
With their 6-2 win-loss record, the Beermen have clinched a quarterfinals spot in the 2024 PBA Governors’ Cup.
It was a night to remember for Lassiter, who became the PBA’s new all-time leader in three-pointers made after sinking his third triple in the first quarter. He finished with 18 points — all on triples — while June Mar Fajardo had 24 points and 17 rebounds. CJ Perez added 22 points and six assists.
San Miguel did not need a big performance from import Jordan Adams, who had 12 points and 11 boards in the win.
So lopsided was the game that SMB coach Jorge Gallent was able to give long minutes to his back-ups, including fan-favorite Kyt Jimenez who knocked down a four-pointer late and finished with six points.
RJ Abarrientos had 19 points and Justin Brownlee put up 16 points, 11 boards, and six assists for the Gin Kings.
Ginebra dropped to 5-3 in the conference.
PBA: San Miguel gets back at NLEX for 2nd straight win
MANILA — San Miguel Beer avenged an earlier loss against NLEX, 119-114, for their fourth win in the 2024 PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The Beermen made it back-to-back wins for a 4-2 record in Group B, while handing the Road Warriors their third loss in a row and dropping them to 3-4.
NLEX had stunned the Beermen, 112-108, when they first played in the conference and appeared headed for another upset win after taking a 92-86 lead at the end of three quarters.
But San Miguel out-scored the Road Warriors 33-22 in the final period to get back at their tormentors.
“I just told them in the second half, that we just have to have pride in playing our one-on-one defense, so that there won’t be a lot of overhelping. They did very well in the second half. There were a few mistakes, but it wasn’t as much as the first half,” said SMB coach Jorge Gallent after the game.
Cjay Perez led San Miguel with 24 points but it was Marcio Lassiter who earned Player of the Game honors with 17 points and six boards. He made four of his seven three-point attempts in the game to climb to second all-time in the league’s list, surpassing the great Allan Caidic.
“Just to be in this elite status is quite amazing, and I’m just truly grateful and thankful. Most important is to get the win. That’s what we needed to do tonight, and it was a great team win tonight,” said Lassiter.
June Mar Fajardo had 17 points and nine rebounds, and import Sheldon Mac had 16 points in 26 minutes.
Lassiter and Don Trollano did most of the damage for the Beermen in the closing stages, nailing the clutch hits that kept NLEX at bay. The Road Warriors had gotten within four, 111-107, with 3:37 to play off a Myke Henry layup but Trollano drilled a clutch jumper with under three minutes left that helped SMB remain in control.
Robert Bolick led the Road Warriors with 24 points and 15 assists, while Henry had 17 points.
